This road covers almost 140 kilometers along the lower Olt River valley. It runs from Ramnicu Valcea south to the town of Caracal. Ramnicu Valcea is an active industrial town at the foot of the Carpathians. The town is home to several interesting churches and an open-air museum. It is also at the crossroads of several main traffic arteries. For a truly dramatic ride, go north on E81 toward Sibiu—the Olt River carved its way into the highest mountain ranges of the Carpathians. From here, E81 also dashes south for 59 kilometers to Pitesti, home to Romania’s auto icon, the Dacia, and then from there, it joins the A1 motorway/freeway into the capital, Bucuresti.

But, DN64 goes directly south following the river’s path toward the Danube. The early stages of the road are scenic, running through hills and a more varied landscape. The farther south you ride, the flatter the landscape becomes as you move into the plains. The road is dotted with small villages, featuring a predominantly rural landscape. The road quality is average to poor in sections, which makes for an uninspiring ride. In all fairness, the route is not particularly appealing, and with practically no attractions. It is useful, however, as a connector road from the south of the country northward into the Carpathians.
